Tyre pressure and tread inspection
The cheapest way to protect range and safety.
You'll learn
- Understand tyre pressure and tread inspection
- Know which checks an owner can do and which need a professional
- Recognise warning signs early
Overview
Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, cutting range and wearing the tyre shoulders. Check pressures monthly when cold.
In depth
| Tread depth | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 8 mm | New tyre |
| 3 mm | Plan replacement, wet grip falling |
| 1.6 mm | Legal minimum in many countries |
Check across the whole width. Wear on the inner edge often means an alignment problem; wear on both edges means low pressure.
Use the door placard
The correct pressure is on the driver's door jamb, not the tyre sidewall.
Key takeaways
Remember this
- Check pressure monthly, cold.
- Replace around 3 mm for good wet grip.
- Uneven wear points to alignment or pressure.
