High-Voltage Safety

High-voltage safety essentials: orange cables, PPE, lifting points, battery fires and when to stop.

Safety first: this content is educational. Never work on energized high-voltage parts (orange cables) unless you are HV-qualified.

Orange means high voltage

HV qualified only

All HV cables and connectors are orange. Never cut, unplug or probe them. EV packs run 400–800 V DC — lethal.

Disabling the HV system

HV qualified only

Only trained technicians remove the service disconnect, wait the specified discharge time and verify zero voltage with a CAT III/IV meter.

PPE for HV work

HV qualified only

Class 0 insulated gloves (tested), leather over-gloves, face shield, insulated tools and a rescue hook.

Lifting an EV

Professional

Use only the marked lift points — wrong placement can puncture the battery pack.

Battery fire or swelling

Owner check

Leave the vehicle, keep away and call emergency services. Thermal runaway can reignite hours later.

Safe owner checks

Owner check

Tyres, wipers, washer fluid, cabin filter, lights and software updates are safe for any owner.

When to stop

Owner check

Any HV warning, burning smell, smoke, hissing, or fluid under the battery: stop and contact a professional.
