State of health and state of charge
The two numbers that describe your battery.
You'll learn
- Understand state of health and state of charge
- Know which checks an owner can do and which need a professional
- Recognise warning signs early
Overview
State of charge (SOC) is how full the battery is now. State of health (SOH) is how much capacity it has left compared with when it was new.
In depth
| SOH | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| 100% | New |
| 90% | Normal after several years |
| 80% | Common warranty threshold |
| 70% | Still usable, noticeably less range |
A battery health report from a dealer or diagnostic tool shows SOH. It is one of the most useful checks when buying a used EV.
Key takeaways
Remember this
- SOC = how full now; SOH = capacity left.
- Warranties often cover dropping below 70–80%.
- Ask for a health report before buying used.
