Running costs and maintenance

Where the money goes, and what a service actually involves.

You'll learn
  • Explain running costs and maintenance in plain language
  • Recognise the key vocabulary
  • Apply the idea to a real vehicle

Overview

An EV has no oil, no spark plugs, no cambelt, no clutch and no exhaust. What remains is tyres, brakes, filters, coolant and software.

In depth

Formula
Cost per 100 km = consumption (kWh/100 km) × electricity price (per kWh)
Example: 16 kWh/100 km × 0.10 currency/kWh = 1.60 per 100 km on an overnight tariff

What a service covers

Cabin filter, brake fluid, coolant condition, tyre wear and alignment, plus a full diagnostic and software update. There is no oil change and no exhaust inspection.

Key takeaways

Remember this
  • Energy costs are typically a third of petrol on a home tariff.
  • Servicing is simpler and usually cheaper.
  • Budget more for tyres.
