What happens when you plug in

Proximity, pilot, isolation test, and the current negotiation loop.

You'll learn
  • Explain what happens when you plug in clearly and accurately
  • Read the numbers that define the behaviour
  • Apply the idea to a real charging session

Overview

Before a single ampere flows, the car and the post run through a scripted conversation lasting a few seconds.

In depth

  1. 1
    Plug detection

Proximity pilot confirms the connector is seated and locked.

  2. 2
    Communication start

Control pilot establishes a digital link and exchanges identities.

  3. 3
    Isolation test

The post checks the DC circuit is isolated from earth before energising.

  4. 4
    Parameter exchange

The car declares its maximum voltage, current and target state of charge.

  5. 5
    Current loop

The car requests a current every few hundred milliseconds; the post follows.

  6. 6
    Termination

Current ramps to zero, contactors open, the connector unlocks.

1 questions
  1. 1

    Order the session start.

    • Plug detection
    • Communication start
    • Isolation test
    • Parameter exchange
    • Current flow
Answer every question, then submit to see explanations.

Key takeaways

Remember this
  • Several checks run before power flows.
  • The vehicle requests current continuously.
  • Isolation testing protects both sides.
