Building a personal charging strategy
Match charging type to your actual driving pattern.
You'll learn
- Explain building a personal charging strategy clearly and accurately
- Read the numbers that define the behaviour
- Apply the idea to a real charging session
Overview
Most drivers need far less charging infrastructure than they expect. Start from your real weekly mileage, not from your worst annual journey.

Energy Consumption Calculator
Turn a trip's energy use into consumption per 100 km and per mile.

Consumption

Efficiency
3.88mi/kWh
Formula
consumption (kWh/100 km) = energy ÷ distance × 100Consumption is the inverse of efficiency. Dividing energy used by distance and scaling to 100 km gives the number most European carmakers quote.
Example: 9.6 kWh used over 60 km → 9.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 16 kWh/100 km.
- Consumption rises roughly with the square of speed because aerodynamic drag dominates above ~80 km/h.
- Cabin heating can add 3–5 kWh/100 km in winter without a heat pump.
- Wh/km is the same figure divided by 10.
- 1Measure
Work out weekly kilometres and typical consumption.
- 2Convert
Multiply to get weekly kWh needed.
- 3Divide
Split across the hours you can realistically plug in.
- 4Choose
Pick the smallest charger that comfortably covers it.
Key takeaways
Remember this
- Size charging to weekly energy, not peak range anxiety.
- Overnight AC covers almost all daily use.
- Rapid charging is a travel tool, not a routine.
