Installing a wallbox
Load assessment, cable runs, protection and certification.
You'll learn
- Explain installing a wallbox clearly and accurately
- Read the numbers that define the behaviour
- Apply the idea to a real charging session
Overview
A good installation is boring: correctly sized, properly protected, sensibly placed and certified. Everything else is detail.
In depth
- 1Assess the supply
Main fuse rating, existing load and whether the incoming supply can take another 32 A.
- 2Plan the route
Shortest practical cable run; voltage drop rises with length and current.
- 3Specify protection
Dedicated breaker plus residual current protection with DC leakage detection.
- 4Position the unit
Reachable from either parking orientation, above splash height, cable never crossing a walkway.
- 5Certify and register
Electrical test certificate, and notification to the network operator where required.
- Load management if the main fuse is marginal
- Tethered or untethered decision made deliberately
- Smart metering or tariff integration configured
- Weather rating suitable for outdoor mounting
Key takeaways
Remember this
- Check the incoming supply before choosing power.
- Load management is cheaper than a supply upgrade.
- Certification and registration are part of the job.
