What a battery management system actually does

Measurement, estimation, protection and communication.

You'll learn
  • Explain what a battery management system actually does at engineering level
  • Read the numbers that define the behaviour
  • Apply the idea to a real pack

Overview

The BMS is the only reason a box of volatile chemistry can be trusted for fifteen years of unattended use. It has four jobs, and they never stop.

In depth

  1. 1
    Measure

Cell group voltages, multiple temperatures, pack current and isolation resistance — many times a second.

  2. 2
    Estimate

State of charge, state of health, available power and remaining energy.

  3. 3
    Protect

Limit current, open contactors, balance cells, refuse charge outside the safe window.

  4. 4
    Communicate

Publish limits and status to the inverter, charger and vehicle controller over CAN.

Quiz

BMS roles

1 questions
  1. 1

    Order the BMS control loop.

    • Measure cells
    • Estimate state
    • Apply limits
    • Publish to vehicle
Answer every question, then submit to see explanations.

Key takeaways

Remember this
  • The BMS measures, estimates, protects and reports.
  • Driver-facing performance is a published power limit.
  • It never sleeps — it monitors while parked too.
