Charging habits that extend pack life
Evidence-based advice, and the myths worth ignoring.
You'll learn
- Explain charging habits that extend pack life at engineering level
- Read the numbers that define the behaviour
- Apply the idea to a real pack
Overview
You cannot stop ageing, but ordinary habits can plausibly change eight-year capacity by ten percentage points or more.
In depth
- Daily charge limit of 80% on nickel-rich chemistries
- Rapid charge when travelling, AC charge at home
- Precondition before winter rapid charging
- Avoid sitting at 100% or below 10% for long periods
- Periodic 100% charge on LFP for gauge calibration

Formula
cost = capacity × ΔSOC ÷ 100 ÷ efficiency × priceYou pay for energy measured at the meter, not the energy that reaches the cells. Dividing by efficiency accounts for the difference.
Example: 60 kWh × 60% ÷ 0.9 = 40 kWh billed. At 0.12/kWh overnight that is 4.80.
- AC home charging is typically 85–92% efficient end to end; DC rapid is 92–96%.
- Some public networks bill by time, which penalises cars that taper early.
- Compare against fuel using cost per 100 km, never cost per fill.
Key takeaways
Remember this
- Mid-band state of charge is the single best habit.
- Warm packs tolerate fast charging well.
- LFP wants regular full charges; NMC does not.
