Climate, parking and long-term storage

Protecting a pack when the car is not being used.

You'll learn
  • Explain climate, parking and long-term storage at engineering level
  • Read the numbers that define the behaviour
  • Apply the idea to a real pack

Overview

Calendar ageing depends on two things you control while parked: state of charge and temperature.

In depth

  • Store at 40–60% state of charge for long periods
  • Park in shade or a garage in hot climates
  • Leave the car plugged in so the BMS can maintain the pack
  • Avoid leaving the car at 100% for days
  • Check state of charge monthly during extended storage

See storage effects

Raise the average climate and time spent above 90% and watch state of health fall.

Key takeaways

Remember this
  • Store cool and mid-charge.
  • Time at high SOC and high temperature is the worst combination.
  • Plugged-in parking lets the BMS look after the pack.
